I ran a taster day this week for an association who want to raise their profile. The people on it were ace – they work, or have worked, in actual operating theatres, in actual hospitals.
They’re completely into what they do (which is reassuring given their vocation) and are keen to spread the word about the value of becoming a member, improving patient safety and raising standards in their profession, through the top-notch training they provide.
They got to have a go at a range of activities to help them increase their visibility, in order to engage and attract members – like speaking, being on a panel or camera. But the by-product of attending a training day like this, and having a go at stuff you wouldn’t normally, is that it can really boost your confidence.
One attendee, Ben, had a go at speaking. He’d never done it before and was obviously nervous when he got up in front of the room. Despite this, his moving talk about his nan dying and how her care could have been so much better, had a few in the room welling up.
He messaged me the next day to say how much he’d enjoyed it and learnt so much – and that he would say yes if an opportunity came his way. What a boost for Ben!
